The Secret Life of Bees

The Hive-12/18/12
The queen, for her part is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness.

-Man and Insects

A bee hive is a well working machine. Every bee has it's jobs and duties. Working as a team, they complete their tasks with excellence. The queen bee is the leader of the hive. She directs the bees so that they complete their jobs. She provides a purpose and an identity to each and every bee.  Now imagine if the queen bee was missing or gone. The bee hive that was working perfectly will crumble to the ground because the one queen bee effects the whole hive.

In Secret Life of Bees Lily's mom has passed. The queen bee is gone. Lily has to live in a crumbled hive, stuck with a very dysfunctional family.

After her mother passed away all that left of her family was a father, a man she doesn't even call dad because she believes he hasn't earned the title. A dad is one to love, protect, and care for his children. T.Ray falls short of the qualities meant for a dad. He in not an example to Lily at all. He drinks, uses foul language, and he is very abusive. In the book T.Ray got upset at Lily. Instead of correcting her out of love, he punished her by making Lily kneel back and forth on grits. The thought of hurting your own child just for the heck of it is something I have a hard time understanding. T.Ray has given up on life and that reflects how he lives each and everyday.

Ever since Lily's mom passed away Rosaleen worked as a maid for T.Ray. She was not treated with respect or loved by anyone but Lily. The lady was a stand-in-mother when no was there to love or protect Lily. In the end, all Lily had was Rosaleen.

There is no queen bee in the home, no one to provide a purpose and an identity for the children. Therefore house that was once standing strong is now crumbled to the ground because one missing member will forever effect the house.
